To quote from Robert Perry's On Design series,

"The Melonseed is a bona fide lifestyle statement. It's 200 pounds of pure sailing essence."

More formally, the Melonseed is a reproduction of an 1880's New Jersey gunning skiff, drawn by Howard Chapelle. The design has been praised by many contemporary sailing publications as being a wonderful performer, great under oars, and a beauty to behold.

Her sprit rig stows handily inside the boat and is free-standing. She can be towed with a small car and can literally be launched in minutes.

Our melonseed is built from the Smithsonian/Chapelle offsets yielding a 13'6" length, 4'4" beam 2'3" and 6" draft...

The basic boat is constructed of atlantic white cedar planking*, white oak steam bent frames, and cypress keel and deckbeams. The hull is encapsulated with epoxy and cloth, inside and out, with a natural varnished interior and an Awlgrip paint system on the exterior.
